What are dental veneers?
Ceramic veneers, also known as porcelain veneers, are thin, tooth-coloured shells of porcelain that are bonded on top of your tooth. Veneers are a cosmetic dentistry treatment that can alter the size, shape, or colour of your teeth. They are an ideal way to improve chipped teeth or close small gaps. They can last 10–15 years with proper care.
Signs you need a veneer
You might need dental veneers if you have the following:
Cosmetic imperfections
You have chips, cracks, or stains that you want to fix. Veneers can also cover up severely stained teeth that whitening treatments can’t fix.
Misaligned teeth
You have minor alignment issues, or your teeth are crooked or uneven. Veneers can fix these issues and make your teeth look more proportional to your face.
Gaps between your teeth
You have small or large gaps between your teeth that you want to close.
Treatment process
Veneers fitting process
Fitting veneers is simple and straightforward. It usually only takes a few sessions to complete this cosmetic dental treatment. Here are the steps involved in a typical veneer treatment.
1. Consultation
We’ll examine your teeth and gums to determine if you’re a good candidate for veneers.
4. Veneers are made
With the scan done, your custom veneers are made.
2. Preparation
Next, we’ll clean your teeth and remove a small amount of enamel to prepare your teeth for the veneer
5. Temporary veneer
In some instances, we fit a temporary veneer while we wait for your custom veneers to be made.
3. Impression
Then we take an impression of your teeth using a tray of soft putty or a 3D digital scanner.
6. Fitting
Finally, we check the fit, color, and shape of your veneers, and then permanently bond them into place using dental cement
Aftercare
After the procedure, your gums may feel a little sore. This is normal and will settle down after a few days of careful brushing. Long term, caring for your veneers is no different to your regular oral hygiene routine. We recommend using a non-abrasive toothpaste so as not to damage the surface of your veneers. Brushing twice a day and flossing as normal will help to keep your overall oral health in good condition.

How long do dental veneers last?
Porcelain veneers are more wear-resistant and made of a tougher material than composite veneers, and usually last 10-15 years. Composite veneers usually last around 4-8 years. Practising regular dental hygiene and avoiding hard or sticky foods will help extend the lifespan of your veneers.
Can you go back to normal teeth after veneers?
Generally, no veneers are not reversible, as the process involves removing a small amount of enamel from your natural teeth to accommodate the veneer.
