What is a filling?
A filling repairs a hole in your tooth, known as a cavity. We remove the decay and replace it with a strong material. This stops the damage and keeps your tooth healthy.
Signs you need a filling
If you have any of the following symptoms, you may need a filling.
Pain/Sensitivity
Toothache or sensitivity are the most common signs you need a filling.
Bad Tastes
Tooth decay can sometimes cause a foul taste in your mouth.
Visible holes
If you notice holes in your teeth, it’s likely you need a filling.
Treatment process
Fillings Process
Dental fillings are a routine procedure at Promenade Dental Practice, Mumbles.
1. Local Anaesthetic
The area to be treated is numbed with a local anaesthetic, and the decayed part of the tooth is removed.
4. Priming Agent
A priming agent is applied to form a strong bond with the composite filling.
2. Gel application
A gel is applied to the tooth, creating tiny holes to allow the composite material to bond effectively.
5. Colour Match
If a composite filling is used, the colour-matched shade of composite is then applied in layers and moulded to match the tooth’s shape.
3. Clean and Dry
The acidic gel is washed away and the tooth dried.
6. Resin Hardened
The resin is hardened with a special bright light and it is then polished to look like a natural part of the tooth.
Aftercare
You can get back to normal quickly after having a filling. You can eat and drink straight after your new filling, but waiting an hour or two might be worth waiting, especially if your mouth is still numb. Sensitivity to heat and cold is common after a filling. This should subside within around two weeks.
