What is a dental hygiene appointment?
Dental hygiene treatment forms part of your regular oral care routine. Cleaning your teeth removes bacteria and debris but rarely removes it all. Our oral hygienist will give your teeth a professional clean, which not only removes existing plaque but makes it more difficult for new plaque to cling to your teeth.

Signs you need a Dental hygiene appointment
You might need a dental hygiene appointment if you have the following:
Plaque and Tartar Build-up
Visible plaque or hard tartar (calculus) buildup, which can’t be removed by regular brushing and flossing, requires professional cleaning.
Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Persistent bad breath can be a sign of poor oral hygiene or underlying dental issues.
Bleeding Gums
Gums that bleed easily, especially when brushing or flossing, might indicate gum disease like gingivitis or periodontitis.
What Happens in a Dental Hygiene Appointment?
When you book a hygiene appointment, we’ll use techniques such as scale and polish to eradicate plaque and tartar and refresh your teeth.
1. Assessment
First, we’ll carry out an initial dental hygiene examination.
4. Tailored advice
During your appointment, we’ll also offer tailored advice on how to maintain good dental health and demonstrate techniques you can use at home.
2. Scale
We’ll scale your teeth to remove any plaque or tartar build-up in those areas brushing cannot reach
3. Polish
We’ll perform a clean and polish to remove any superficial stains on your teeth
Aftercare
After a dental hygiene appointment, to help maintain your oral health and ensure the benefits of your cleaning last longer, it’s advisable to avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 mins after treatment. Continue or start brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid further irritation to your gums. Floss daily to remove plaque from between your teeth.
