What Is routine dentistry?
Modern dentistry focuses firmly on prevention to help maintain healthy teeth and gums. This includes avoiding dental problems or stopping them from getting any worse by keeping a close eye on your mouth. Routine dentistry covers regular dental care practices and procedures that help you maintain oral health and prevent dental diseases. This includes treatments such as check-ups, x-rays, fillings, oral hygiene education, and gum health checks.

The importance of routine dentistry
Regular visits to the dentist and hygienist mean any issues can be spotted early and addressed before they progress. These problems can include:
Decay and cavities
Dental decay, also known as tooth decay, is the process by which bacteria in the mouth convert sugars from foods and drinks into acids. These acids can erode the enamel, which is the hard, protective outer layer of your teeth. Over time, if the decay process isn’t halted, it leads to cavities.
Gum Disease
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It’s typically caused by poor oral hygiene, which allows plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—to accumulate on the teeth.
Oral Cancer
Oral cancer refers to cancer that develops in any part of the oral cavity. Regular checkups will help detect early signs and guide you in the right direction for treatment.

Aftercare
As well as visiting us every six months, there are several things you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy. These include: Brush teeth effectively – brush twice a day and clean between teeth with floss or interdental brushes. Use a toothpaste that contains fluoride as this can help strengthen teeth. Avoid too many sugary snacks and drinks – these combine with harmful bacteria on the teeth to create enamel-attacking acid. Give up smoking – it can cause a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream, which inhibits healing and can increase your risk of developing gum disease. Smoking can also cause an increased amount of plaque and tartar, as well as staining teeth. Start oral education early – encourage children to start looking after their teeth as early as possible.

What is routine dental treatment?
Regular dental checkups, dental X-rays, teeth cleaning, teeth whitening and normal dental fillings are considered routine dental services because they won’t demand any complex oral surgeries, but they are important as well to avoid any further dental complexities.
How often do you need a dental check-up?
We recommend every 6 months for adults. However, if your teeth and gums are healthy, you may only need a check-up every 12 or 24 months. We recommend a maximum interval of 12 months for children.
