Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking are just some of the things that can stain and discolour your teeth. You might need teeth whitening if you have the following:

This can be caused by ageing, smoking, or consuming dark-coloured foods and drinks.
Uneven colouration
Some teeth may be darker or more discolored than others. This can be caused by genetics, medication, or poor oral hygiene.
Dullness or lack of luster

Shade check and consultation
The dentist examines your teeth and matches your current tooth colour to a guide. This gives you a baseline to see exactly how much brighter your smile gets.
Gel and light activation
The dentist applies the peroxide whitening gel to your teeth and shines a special LED or laser light on them to accelerate the process. This is usually left on for 15 minutes, rinsed, and repeated 2 to 3 times.
Cleaning and prep
Your teeth are polished with a gritty paste to remove surface plaque. Then, a plastic guard is placed in your mouth to keep your lips and cheeks away from your teeth.
Final rinse
Everything is suctioned out, your mouth is thoroughly rinsed, and the gum guard is removed. You get to look in the mirror and see a smile that is typically 3 to 8 shades lighter.
Gum protection
The whitening gel is powerful, so the dentist paints a protective barrier over your gums. This hardens under a light and acts as a shield against irritation.
Aftercare
You can help maintain the whiteness of your teeth by avoiding food and drink that may cause staining and brushing your teeth at least twice a day. Teeth whitening does not give permanent results, but home whitening trays can be reused if a top-up is necessary.
